France is a Western European country whose intelligence services (SDECE/DGSE) conducted covert operations including the fabrication of the 'Nautilus telepathy project' story and organization of the Safari Club anti-Soviet intelligence alliance under SDECE director Alexandre de Marenches.

Its intelligence services have been implicated in various international affairs, including alleged involvement in disinformation campaigns related to psychic research during the Cold War. For instance, Jacques Bergier, a French consulting editor with alleged ties to French Intelligence, played a role in disseminating the fabricated "The Nautilus" story, which had significant repercussions for Soviet psi research.1
