CIA Operations
The CIA's Chile program became a template for later covert operations in Central America, including the Contra war. The methods developed in Chile, including the use of propaganda, economic warfare, and support for opposition groups, were applied on a larger scale in Nicaragua. The Chile operation demonstrated the CIA's willingness to undermine democratic governments in pursuit of U.S. foreign policy objectives, a pattern that continued through the Contra era and the protection of drug trafficking assets.2
