Muammar Qaddafi
Libyan leader who pressured African nations to cut ties with Israel and was linked to the disappearance of Shi'ite leader Sheikh Mussa Sadr.
Muammar Qaddafi was the leader of Libya. He played a role in African politics, promising money to black African nations if they cut ties with Israel. This led to a deterioration of relations between Israel and Uganda under Idi Amin.1
Col. Qaddafi's right-hand man, Maj. Abdul Salam Jalloud, visited Iran to congratulate the new regime after the Iranian Revolution. During his visit, Iranian hosts questioned him about the disappearance of Sheikh Mussa Sadr, a Shi'ite leader from southern Lebanon, who was believed to have been killed by the Libyans. Jalloud was detained for three weeks until Qaddafi personally intervened and spoke to Khomeini.1
