Tutogen Medical
New Jersey tissue processor that bought tissue from Biomedical Tissue Services, including bones taken from Alistair Cooke, and merged into RTI Biologics in 2008.
Tutogen Medical, Inc., of Paterson, New Jersey, was a tissue processor that bought tissue from Biomedical Tissue Services, the company of Michael Mastromarino. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it was one of five processors that received BTS tissue directly and recalled it in September and October 2005.1 According to the New York Daily News, bones taken from the body of the broadcaster Alistair Cooke were sold for more than 7,000 dollars to Tutogen and Regeneration Technologies.2 In 2008 the Associated Press reported that the processors that had bought from BTS faced hundreds of civil suits from recipients.3 On February 27, 2008, Tutogen completed its merger with Regeneration Technologies, in a transaction valued at about 205 million dollars, to form RTI Biologics, Inc.4
