The 7th Psychological Operations Group was a U.S. Army psychological operations unit headquartered on Okinawa during the Vietnam War era. The unit produced classified analytical documents supporting psychological operations planning in the Pacific theater, including the weekly series Communist Propaganda Highlights and Trends Analysis.1

Communist Propaganda Highlights

The 7th Group produced two types of classified weekly analytical documents. The first, Communist Propaganda Highlights and Trends Analysis, listed propaganda highlights by country with evaluative comments assessing propaganda value. A September 1971 issue (Issue 23, 38 pages) analyzed four communist radio sources operating in Laos: Radio Pathet Lao (RPL), Radio Patriotic Neutralists Forces (RPNF), Liberation Radio (LR), and Radio Peking (RP). Each source's output was quantified by items and minutes distributed across theme categories including praise of the leader, promulgation of ideology, present success of socialism, international prestige, and related propaganda dimensions.

The second type, Trends Analysis, presented a continuous account of radio and news service propaganda released by communist stations to Asian nations, identifying recurring themes across time to allow trend detection for counterpropaganda planning. Analysis for both document types was based on material received at the Okinawa headquarters. Issue 38 (1971, 51 pages) followed the same format. The documents illustrate the intelligence function embedded in psyops units: alongside leaflet drops and loudspeaker operations, these units maintained systematic monitoring of adversary propaganda in order to identify vulnerabilities and calibrate counterpropaganda messaging.1

Leaflet Drift Calculations

The 7th Group prepared a 115-page booklet for psychological operations personnel explaining all aspects of leaflet drift calculations: drift from various altitudes, under various wind conditions, in wet and dry weather, at different aircraft speeds, and the mathematical calculations needed to achieve a specified density of leaflet distribution at any given ground point.1

Vietnam Psyops Infrastructure

The 7th Psychological Operations Group operated within the broader infrastructure of US psychological operations in Vietnam, which included the 4th Psychological Operations Group, the 10th Psyop Battalion, and the 5th Special Squadron. The Army Concept Team in Vietnam served as the evaluation body for psychological operations output across the theater, assessing the effectiveness of specific programs including the Chieu Hoi surrender campaign, the B-52 Follow-Up Programme, and the Frantic Goat Campaign.1

The production of weekly propaganda analysis documents from Okinawa reflects the extent to which psychological operations in this period were institutionalized as a standing intelligence and information function rather than an ad hoc wartime activity. The Human Resources Research Institute (HRRI) at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama contributed to this analytical base; it produced classified studies of Chinese Communist newspapers as early as 1951 and conducted research on family dynamics and political structure in Communist China for use in propaganda development.1
