Insight Roles

Insight Roles is an Order of Nine Angles doctrine prescribing that adherents commit crimes, including violence, as a required stage of spiritual development, the practice most directly connecting O9A ideology to real-world terrorism.

"Insight Roles" is a doctrinal practice of the Order of Nine Angles (O9A) prescribing that adherents undertake a series of transgressive acts, which may include violent crimes, as a required stage of initiation through O9A's Seven Fold Way initiatory system. The doctrine holds that by engaging directly with extreme or "sinister" experiences, including murder, the practitioner transcends conventional morality and develops genuine esoteric understanding unavailable to those who remain within ordinary social constraints. O9A's explicit theological framing of criminal violence as a spiritual practice is the core feature that has led governments, researchers, and prosecutors to treat O9A as categorically more dangerous than other neo-Nazi organizations that advocate violence abstractly.1

Doctrinal Basis

The Insight Roles doctrine appears first in Naos: A Guide to Becoming (1989), the foundational O9A manuscript attributed to David Myatt under his O9A alias "Anton Long," and is described in detail in Hostia: Secret Teachings of the O.N.A. (Volume I, 1992), which contains the text "Insight Roles - A Guide." The doctrine is also elaborated in subsequent O9A publications and on the o9a.org website.

The conceptual framework is drawn from O9A's synthesis of neo-Nazism with Qliphothic Kabbalah and Satanism: ordinary morality is a construct of the "mundane" world that limits the practitioner's development; the path to genuine power and esoteric achievement requires direct experience with the darkest aspects of existence. An "insight role" is a prescribed activity, typically lasting between three months and a year, during which the adherent takes on a role that challenges their previous moral framework. The explicitly prescribed examples in O9A texts include: joining an organized criminal gang, joining an extremist political organization intending to commit crimes, and committing murder or acts of significant violence against persons O9A's framework designates as worthy targets (usually outgroups).1

Criminal Prosecutions Citing Insight Roles

O9A's Insight Roles doctrine has been cited in criminal proceedings as the ideological framework within which defendants planned or carried out attacks.

Ethan Phelan Melzer, a U.S. Army private and confirmed O9A member, was convicted in 2023 for planning the mass killing of members of his own unit while deployed in Turkey, providing operational intelligence about his unit's position and defenses to an O9A-linked group (RapeWaffen) on Telegram. Prosecutors documented his O9A affiliation and framing of the planned attack as an Insight Role in the sentencing record. He was sentenced to 45 years in federal prison.

Guilherme Von Neutegem, a Toronto-area O9A adherent, fatally stabbed mosque caretaker Mohamed-Aslim Zafis outside a mosque in Rexdale, Ontario in September 2020. Investigators found an O9A altar in his residence and O9A-related social media content. He was found not criminally responsible due to schizophrenia in March 2023.

The Atomwaffen Division's integration of O9A doctrine (facilitated by Joshua Caleb Sutter, who joined AWD in 2017) introduced Insight Roles into the AWD membership, contributing to the escalation in AWD-linked violence documented between 2017 and 2020.2

Seven Fold Way and the O9A Practice System

Insight Roles function within O9A's larger Seven Fold Way initiatory system, a multi-stage path through which practitioners seek to develop their personal power and esoteric understanding over years or decades. The roles are one component of this system, alongside the Star Game (a strategy game used as esoteric training), nexion work (organizational and ritual activities), and the study of O9A's extensive philosophical and fictional literature.

The fictional component of O9A radicalization is distinct: O9A's Deofel Quintet novels (particularly The Temple of Satan), and the Tempel ov Blood-published Iron Gates (2014), all present violence and transgression in glorifying fictional framing that functions as both radicalization material and as implicit prescriptions for behavior consistent with Insight Roles doctrine. The line between fictional exploration and operational prescription is structurally blurred in O9A's presentation of the Insight Roles concept.3
