Steve Rios was an attorney in San Juan Capistrano. Fred Alvarez, Joseph R. (Mike) Benitez, and William Callaway were scheduled to meet with Rios at 10 a.m. on July 1, 1981, to initiate an investigation of Cabazon tribal affairs, according to the Indio Daily News. Instead, Alvarez and two others were executed on June 29.1
