Hank Brown

George Hanks "Hank" Brown (born February 12, 1940) represented Colorado as a Republican in the United States House of Representatives from 1981 to 1991 and in the United States Senate from 1991 to 1997. As the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on terrorism, narcotics and international operations, the Kerry Committee, he joined Senator John Kerry in the investigation of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) and co-signed its report of December 1992.¹²

Career

Brown was born in Denver, graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School in 1957 and the University of Colorado in 1961, and served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966. He took a law degree at the University of Colorado in 1969 and a master's in tax law at George Washington University in 1986, and became a certified public accountant in 1988. He was a vice president of the meatpacker Monfort of Colorado from 1969 to 1980 and a member of the Colorado state senate from 1972 to 1976. After six years in the Senate he did not seek reelection in 1996. He was later co-director of the Center for Public Policy and Contemporary Issues at the University of Denver, president of the University of Northern Colorado from 1998 to 2002, president of the Daniels Fund from 2002 to 2005, and president of the University of Colorado from 2005 to 2008.¹

BCCI

Brown joined the BCCI investigation as ranking member after the Foreign Relations Committee formally authorized it on May 23, 1991.² The report, The BCCI Affair, Senate Print 102-140, bears the names of both senators. The archivist Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists wrote in a note to the committee's electronic text that after the report's release "Sen. Hank Brown, reportedly acting at the behest of Henry Kissinger, pressed for the deletion of a few passages, particularly in Chapter 20 on 'BCCI and Kissinger Associates,'" with the result that the version printed by the Government Printing Office "differs slightly from the Committee's softcopy version." The chapter concerned Kissinger Associates and its dealings with BCCI.³
