David Maland

David Christopher Maland was born in Blue Earth, Minnesota, on February 19, 1980, graduated from Fairmont High School in 1999 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force that June, serving six years as a Security Forces journeyman; his decorations included the Air Force Achievement Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal. According to his family's obituary, he was at the Pentagon "as active security on 9/11." He then worked for the U.S. Department of State as a K9 handler "serving executives in the U.S. Government," took a B.A. from Metropolitan State University in 2012, and after the Border Patrol Academy served two years as an agent in Texas. In 2019 he transferred to Newport, Vermont, as a Border Patrol agent, K9 agent and member of the Mobile Response Team.¹

Death

Maland was killed on January 20, 2025, in a shootout at a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont, of a car driven by Teresa Youngblut with Felix Bauckholt as passenger; Bauckholt was killed and Youngblut wounded. Law enforcement linked both to The Zizians. Youngblut was charged in federal court with his murder, pleaded not guilty and was held without bail, and prosecutors filed notice that they would seek the death penalty. In August 2026 her lawyers argued that the authorities had determined before the stop that Bauckholt held a valid visa, contrary to the stop's stated immigration basis; the prosecutor, Matthew Lasher, wrote that their source "indicated only" that a visa had been issued.² He was buried on February 22, 2025 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with military honors.¹
