Darby Lloyd Rains

Darby Lloyd Rains, born Barbara in 1947 ("not 1948 as it says some places on the internet," she said), is a former adult film actress who was among the early group of New York performers of the 1970s with Marc Stevens, Tina Russell, Georgina Spelvin and Jamie Gillis; she played the lead in Naked Came the Stranger (1975).¹²

Early Life

She grew up in Yorktown Heights in Westchester County. Her father, from a musical family of the Pacific Northwest, had roles in Broadway productions of the 1950s including Brigadoon and The Pajama Game, toured with a male quartet, the Revelers, and later taught music at a local high school. With a friend she formed a singing duo, Cranberry, which recorded for Liberty Records with Joe Negroni of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers as producer; the record never had a real release.¹ Her early films included Sex U.S.A. and Dark Dreams (1971).¹ In February 1973 she appeared in The Erotic Memoirs of a Male Chauvinist Pig, shot in Philadelphia by R.C. Horsch.³⁴

Elizabeth Arrest

In 1974, she said, Stevens persuaded her to make a personal appearance at a new theater in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the Liberty, which was showing Lady on a Couch; police arrested her, Stevens and a man named Allen under a local ordinance against exhibiting adult films. "I told the cops, 'We're not exhibiting anything!'" she said. The authorities, she said, released them on condition that they sign a document absolving the police of blame. She left New York in the late 1970s.²
