Thiel Influence Network

The Thiel Influence Network is the set of overlapping commercial, convening, ideological, and political vehicles built around Peter Thiel since 2002, including the Thiel Fellowship, Founders Fund, Palantir Technologies, Dialog, Hereticon, Per Aspera Policy, and Teneo Network, each operating at a different stage of recruitment, capital deployment, or institutional positioning.

The Thiel Influence Network is the set of overlapping commercial, convening, ideological, and political vehicles built around Peter Thiel since the 2002 sale of PayPal. The network comprises at least eight layers operating at different stages of recruitment, capital deployment, convening, and institutional positioning: the Machine Intelligence Research Institute and the Rationalist Community it seeded (ideological incubation), the Thiel Fellowship (recruitment of young founders), the Founders Fund portfolio (commercial investment), Palantir Technologies (government contracting and data infrastructure), Dialog (wide convening), Hereticon (narrower heterodoxy convening), the Per Aspera Policy political-action vehicle (dark-money electoral spending), and the Teneo Network (conservative-leadership placement across American institutions). The 2026 Dialog leak exposed the membership of the widest convening layer.12

The Commercial Layer

The commercial layer is the Founders Fund portfolio and Palantir Technologies. Founders Fund, founded in 2005, is the venture vehicle that concentrates capital in firms pursuing monopoly positions in foundational technology categories (payments, defense, space, biotechnology). Palantir Technologies, founded in 2003, is the government-contracting vehicle that supplies data-fusion infrastructure to the intelligence, defense, and law-enforcement agencies. The two firms are the financial and operational base of the network: Founders Fund produces the returns and identifies the talent; Palantir Technologies produces the government client relationships and the privatized-state-capacity infrastructure.3

The PayPal Mafia cohort is the original commercial layer from which the others were built. The PayPal founders and early executives who dispersed into subsequent ventures, including Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman, Max Levchin, David Sacks, Ken Howery, Luke Nosek, Roelof Botha, and Keith Rabois, form the recurring capital, endorsement, and board network that underwrites the subsequent Founders Fund and Palantir Technologies deals. Six members of the PayPal Mafia appear on the leaked 2026 Dialog retreat roster.1

The Convening Layers

The convening function operates across at least three documented tiers. Dialog, founded in 2006 by Peter Thiel and Auren Hoffman, is the widest tier, convening a 222-name 2026 retreat roster that spans sitting U.S. senators of both parties, an active four-star NATO commander (General Alexus Grynkewich), sitting technology executives, and venture capitalists. Dialog operates under off-the-record rules with no published attendee list and no press access. The 2026 registration fee was reported as exceeding 16,000 dollars.1

Hereticon, founded in 2019 and organized by Mike Solana of Founders Fund, is the narrower tier, self-described as "a conference for thoughtcrime" and oriented to ideological heterodoxy, life-extension research, UFO claims, and defense-technology ethics. The Hereticon invitation list is more selective than the Dialog list and draws more heavily on the Founders Fund portfolio and the Thiel-network ideological principals. The two convenings share the Founders Fund financial base and the Thiel reputational base, and the same individuals appear across both.4

A third convening tier, the Teneo Network, operates in the conservative institutional sphere rather than in the technology sphere. Founded in 2008 by Evan Baehr and Josh Hawley and chaired since 2021 by Leonard Leo, Teneo is a members-only conservative-leadership organization whose stated goal is to place conservatives across American law, finance, media, academia, and culture. The Teneo network overlaps with the Thiel network at the level of shared donor infrastructure and shared ideological framing around the rollback of liberal institutional dominance, and Baehr moved in the Thiel orbit before founding Teneo.5

The Recruitment Layer

The Thiel Fellowship, founded in 2010, is the recruitment layer. The fellowship awards 250,000 dollars over two years to people aged 22 or younger on the condition that they skip or stop out of college, and it identifies high-potential individuals at the point of educational exit rather than at the point of commercial or political entry. The fellowship alumni roster includes Vitalik Buterin (Ethereum), Austin Russell (Luminar Technologies), Laura Deming (Longevity Fund), and Ritesh Agarwal (Oyo Rooms). Fellows receive access to the Thiel Foundation network of founders, investors, and scientists, and the cohort forms a peer network that persists past the award period.6

The recruitment function extends to the political layer. In the JD Vance trajectory, Thiel hired Vance at Mithril Capital in 2017, backed his venture firm Narya Capital, donated approximately fifteen million dollars to the Protect Ohio Values super PAC for his 2022 Senate primary, and brokered his 2024 vice-presidential nomination. The Vance trajectory compressed a three-and-a-half-year path from private citizen to Vice President on a single-donor financial base. Josh Hawley's path from Teneo cofounder to elected office follows the same pattern of network-based political recruitment.75

The Ideological Seedbed Layer

Before the convening and political layers, Thiel funded the intellectual subculture that supplied much of the network's worldview. From 2005 he was the earliest prominent backer of the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence (later the Machine Intelligence Research Institute), founded by Eliezer Yudkowsky, and in 2006 he cofounded its conference, the Singularity Summit, with Yudkowsky and the futurist Ray Kurzweil. The donations, later reported as exceeding 1.6 million dollars, helped seed the Bay Area rationalist scene and the overlapping Effective Altruism movement, whose 2013 summit Thiel keynoted.15

The same milieu incubated a cluster of groups described as cults: Leverage Research under Geoff Anders, the Vassarite circle, and the Zizian formation that was tied to six killings across three states between 2022 and 2025. Cult dynamics recur as a theme across the network: Thiel's 2014 book Zero to One describes the best startups as "slightly less extreme kinds of cults," Dialog placed a "cult-building" session on its 2026 retreat agenda, and Hereticon programs heterodox content adjacent to the rationalist and transhumanist subcultures. Thiel broke with the AI-risk wing in 2025, naming Yudkowsky alongside Nick Bostrom and Greta Thunberg as a "legionnaire of the Antichrist" in his leaked San Francisco lecture series.16

The Political and Dark-Money Layer

The Per Aspera Policy vehicle is the dark-money layer. OpenSecrets reported in February 2022 that Per Aspera Policy, a Thiel-tied 501(c)(4) organization, steered approximately 200,000 dollars to the Protect Ohio Values super PAC alongside Thiel's direct contributions. The 501(c)(4) form permits political spending without donor disclosure, unlike the disclosed super-PAC spending. The Campaign Legal Center filed an FEC complaint in June 2022 alleging illegal coordination between Protect Ohio Values and the Vance campaign; the FEC dismissed the complaint in 2024.8

The political layer extends through the Teneo Network's placement infrastructure and through the broader Leonard Leo dark-money operation, which directed approximately one billion dollars into the conservative judicial-selection project through the Judicial Crisis Network and linked vehicles. The Thiel and Leo networks overlap at the level of donor infrastructure and ideological framing, and both operate through the 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(3) structures that permit political and ideological spending with limited disclosure.5

The Epstein Document Thread

The unsealed Jeffrey Epstein document releases under the Epstein Files Transparency Act (EFTA) in 2025 and 2026 surfaced a correspondence between Epstein and Thiel that runs from 2011 through 2019, eight years after Epstein's 2008 federal non-prosecution agreement. The primary-document index maintained by Tommy Carstensen, cross-referencing the EFTA releases, documents the key exchanges by document ID. On February 6, 2016, Epstein wrote in an email (EFTA01738574) that "peter thiel LOVED the secret socieity [sic] idea.. he has done alot of work on the concept. all failed so far." Reid Hoffman hosted an August 2015 dinner in Palo Alto (EFTA00344556, EFTA00344564) whose guest list included Thiel, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Joi Ito of the MIT Media Lab, and Epstein. Jacobin reported in April 2026 that hundreds of emails document Epstein's encouragement of Thiel's political trajectory, including a February 2013 audio recording of Epstein advising Thiel.91011

The 2015 dinner guest list (EFTA00344556, EFTA00344564) included Thiel, Ito, and Epstein together, documenting co-presence on a single occasion. The triangular Thiel-Ito-Epstein "secret society" thread is now substantiated at the level of co-presence rather than at the level of a specific recorded three-way discussion. The Ito-Epstein-MIT Media Lab funding relationship is documented separately through Ronan Farrow's New Yorker reporting (September 2019).

The Carstensen index documents additional Thiel-Epstein exchanges including a 2014 meeting at the Epstein townhouse attended by CIA director William J. Burns and a separate occasion on which Thiel lunched with the Russian UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin (EFTA01469750). The Burns co-presence placed the CIA director and a major CIA contractor's chairman (Thiel) in the same room on an occasion organized by Epstein, the specific documented overlap between the intelligence-community leadership and the Thiel commercial network on Epstein-mediated terrain.

Epstein separately pitched Palantir to former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak in emails that name Thiel, extending the documented Thiel-Epstein-Barak triangle into the Israeli-intelligence and defense-contracting sphere. Barak, the former prime minister and defense minister, was a documented Epstein associate who visited the Epstein residence repeatedly, and the Epstein-Barak-Thiel email chain is the channel through which Epstein attempted to broker a Palantir investment from Barak.

The 2013 Dialog retreat invitation forwarded to Epstein in November 2012 (DOJ document D-23831) placed Epstein on the Dialog circulation list. The New York Times reported in May 2023 that Thiel met with Epstein multiple times in 2014. The documented Thiel-Epstein relationship runs from 2011 through 2019, eight years after Epstein's 2008 federal non-prosecution agreement, which is the timeframe over which the Dialog convening, the Palantir government-contracting expansion, and the Neoreaction-patronage intellectual project were all being built out in parallel.1121314
