--- category: U.S. State created: 2026-09-22 summary: State of the CIA's Camp Peary, the Army's Fort Belvoir and Fort Monroe and the NSA's Vint Hill Farms Station, and of the Culpeper property of The Finders' Marion Pettie. tags: - Place - USState - CIA - Military - Accelerationism updated: 2026-09-22 --- ### Installations From April 1964 to October 1967 the Soviet defector [Yuri Nosenko](/people/yuri-nosenko/) was held in solitary confinement in a specially built cell at Camp Peary, "The Farm," the [CIA](/organizations/central-intelligence-agency/)'s training facility, on the judgment of [James Jesus Angleton](/people/james-jesus-angleton/) that he was a false defector.[^1] From September 1966 to September 1967 [Manuel Contreras](/people/manuel-contreras/), later head of Chile's [DINA](/organizations/dina/), attended the Army's career officers school at Fort Belvoir.[^2] Lieutenant Colonel [Jim Channon](/people/jim-channon/) wrote *[The First Earth Battalion](/programs/first-earth-battalion/)* in 1979 as a concept paper of Task Force Delta at the headquarters of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe.[^3] [Alan Standorf](/people/alan-standorf/), a civilian analyst at Vint Hill Farms Station outside Warrenton, "which is run by the army for the [National Security Agency](/organizations/nsa/)," died of a blow to the head around January 3, 1991, and was found in the back seat of his car at Washington National Airport on January 28.[^4] In June 1955 [Nelson Rockefeller](/people/nelson-rockefeller/)'s first Quantico panel met at the Marine Corps School in Quantico.[^5] ### Residents and Meetings [Marion Pettie](/people/marion-pettie/), founder of [The Finders](/organizations/the-finders/), was born in Culpeper in 1920, ran a communal property in the mountains near the town, and died there on October 24, 2003; he said [Timothy Leary](/people/timothy-leary/) sent people down to it in the 1960s.[^6] [Aldrich Ames](/people/aldrich-ames/) bought a 540,000-dollar house in Arlington for cash in 1989, on a CIA salary of about 70,000 dollars.[^7] In September 1976 the investigator Gaeton Fonzi arranged for Antonio Veciana to meet [David Atlee Phillips](/people/david-atlee-phillips/) at a conference of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers in Reston.[^8] [Sidney Gottlieb](/people/sidney-gottlieb/) kept a goat farm in rural Virginia.[^9] [Harry Snyder](/people/harry-snyder/) of Virginia Tech and Arlene Snyder, as Systemetrics of Blacksburg, wrote the 1979 critical evaluation of remote-viewing research held by the CIA.[^10] The Virginia editor James J. Kilpatrick was vice chairman of the segregationist [Coordinating Committee for Fundamental American Freedoms](/organizations/coordinating-committee-for-fundamental-american-freedoms/), which grew out of discussions that included Hugh V.
