### CIA Operations

The CIA's Chile program became a template for later covert operations in [Central America](/places/central-america/), including the Contra war. The methods developed in Chile, including the use of propaganda, economic warfare, and support for opposition groups, were applied on a larger scale in Nicaragua. The Chile operation demonstrated the CIA's willingness to undermine democratic governments in pursuit of U.S. foreign policy objectives, a pattern that continued through the Contra era and the protection of drug trafficking assets.[^2]
