[Timothy Phelps](/people/timothy-phelps/) was the Middle East correspondent for *Newsday*, based in [Cairo](/places/cairo/). He visited [Ari Ben-Menashe](/people/ari-ben-menashe/) several times in [Jerusalem](/places/jerusalem/), where [Ben-Menashe](/people/ari-ben-menashe/) provided him with details about the [North](/people/oliver-north/) story, which later became known as the [Iran-Contra Affair](/events/iran-contra-affair/). However, *Newsday* did not print the story.[^1]
