[Steve Rios](/people/steve-rios/) was an attorney in San Juan Capistrano. [Fred Alvarez](/people/fred-alvarez/), [Joseph R. (Mike) Benitez](/people/joseph-r-mike-benitez/), and [William Callaway](/people/william-callaway/) were scheduled to meet with Rios at 10 a.m. on July 1, 1981, to initiate an investigation of [Cabazon tribal](/places/cabazon-indian-reservation/) affairs, according to the *Indio Daily News*. Instead, Alvarez and two others were executed on June 29.[^1]
