[Sheikh Mussa Sadr](/people/sheikh-mussa-sadr/) was a Shi'ite leader from southern [Lebanon](/places/lebanon/). He disappeared on a visit to [Libya](/places/libya/) in 1978. The [Libyans](/places/libya/) were believed to have killed him for preaching Shi'ite Islam rather than their own brand of the religion.[^1]

His disappearance became a point of contention during [Maj. Abdul Salam Jalloud's](/people/abdul-salam-jalloud/) visit to [Iran](/places/iran/) after the [Iranian Revolution](/events/iranian-revolution/), with [Iranian](/places/iran/) hosts demanding an explanation from [Col. Qaddafi's](/people/muammar-qaddafi/) right-hand man.[^1]
