[Shahpour Bakhtiar](/people/shahpour-bakhtiar/) was the last prime minister appointed by [the Shah](/people/mohammad-reza-pahlavi/) of [Iran](/places/iran/), serving as a compromise with the opposition. He was a supporter of [Mohammed Mossadegh](/people/mohammed-mossadegh/) and a member of the National Front.[^1]

After [the Shah's](/people/mohammad-reza-pahlavi/) departure from [Iran](/places/iran/) in January 1979, [Bakhtiar](/people/shahpour-bakhtiar/) proved unable to function effectively. Following [Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's](/people/ayatollah-ruhollah-khomeini/) arrival in [Iran](/places/iran/) on February 1, 1979, [Bakhtiar](/people/shahpour-bakhtiar/) went into hiding ten days later and eventually found exile in [Paris](/places/paris/), [France](/places/france/). He was assassinated in [Paris](/places/paris/) in 1991.[^1]
