Pavel Naumov was a [Soviet](/places/soviet-union/) military scientist who reportedly conducted a notable [ESP](/concepts/extrasensory-perception/) experiment around 1956. This experiment involved a mother rabbit, her newborn litter, a submerged Soviet submarine, and a research station on shore[^1].

In this experiment, the baby rabbits were placed aboard the submarine, and electrodes were implanted in the mother rabbit's brain at the shore-based laboratory. When the baby rabbits were killed one by one, the mother rabbit's brain produced detectable and recordable reactions. The results of this experiment, if believed, suggested that [ELF](/concepts/extremely-low-frequency-elf-waves/) might be an ESP information carrier channel[^1].

This experiment was known to [Stephan Schwartz](/people/stephan-schwartz/), a former U.S. naval officer, and contributed to the U.S. military's interest in exploring the relationship between ELF and ESP for potential communication in a post-nuclear strike environment[^1].
