[Patrick Gordon MacDonald](/people/patrick-gordon-macdonald/) (alias "Dark Foreigner," Ottawa, Ontario) was convicted in April 2025 by Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Smith of three terrorism-related charges arising from his production and distribution of [Atomwaffen Division](/organizations/atomwaffen-division/) recruitment propaganda in 2018 and 2019. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison on September 8, 2025, by Public Prosecution Service of Canada prosecutors based in Montreal.[^1]

MacDonald is distinct from [Kristopher Erik Nippak](/people/kristopher-erik-nippak/) and [Matthew Althorpe](/people/matthew-althorpe/), whose separate prosecution covers [Terrorgram Collective](/organizations/terrorgram-collective/) content; the MacDonald case is rooted in the earlier AWD propaganda period but represents part of the same Canadian prosecution wave targeting the AWD-to-Terrorgram accelerationist lineage.

### Charges and Conviction

The three charges of which MacDonald was convicted: participating in terrorist activity; facilitating terrorist activity; and inciting hate against Jews for one or more terrorist entities, including Atomwaffen Division and materials associated with [James Mason](/people/james-mason/).

The offenses occurred in 2018 and 2019, when MacDonald was 20 and 21 years old, across Ottawa, Belleville, Ontario, and Saint-Ferdinand, Quebec. He participated in the creation and editing of three AWD recruitment videos encouraging viewers to commit violent acts on behalf of AWD and posted them along with other violent imagery online as AWD propaganda. He also provided his own camera and lenses for filming the videos, thereby facilitating their production.

Under his "Dark Foreigner" alias, MacDonald disseminated propaganda across multiple social platforms. He concealed his account passwords and usernames above ceiling tiles in his residence to avoid detection.

His trial began in November 2024. Justice Smith found him guilty on all three counts in April 2025.

### Prosecution and Sentence

Federal Crown prosecutors based in Montreal argued for a 14-year sentence, describing his crimes as "vile." The defence sought six to eight years. Justice Smith imposed 10 years; with credit for time already served in custody and under strict bail conditions, MacDonald had approximately nine years and nine months remaining at the time of the September 8, 2025, sentencing announcement.[^2]

The Canadian Anti-Hate Network coverage of the case notes that the conviction and sentence established a precedent for prosecuting propaganda production and distribution under Canadian terrorism statutes when the propaganda is demonstrably connected to a listed terrorist organization.
