Mark W. Everson

Mark W. Everson served in the Reagan DOJ from 1982 to 1988 as deputy commissioner of INS, later became IRS Commissioner from 2003 to 2007, and is associated with a restricted PROMIS-related file in the National Archives whose connection to his DOJ tenure has not been publicly explained.

Mark Whitty Everson was born September 10, 1954, in New York City. He received a B.A. in history from Yale and an M.S. in accounting from NYU Stern School of Business.

Everson served in the Reagan administration from 1982 to 1988, first at the United States Information Agency and subsequently as deputy commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) within the Department of Justice. He subsequently entered private industry, serving as Group Vice President of Finance at SC International Services (SkyChefs) and as Senior Vice President with the Pechiney Group.

In 2001 he joined the Bush administration as Deputy Director for Management at the Office of Management and Budget, chairing the President's Management Council. In 2003 he was confirmed as IRS Commissioner, serving until 2007. He subsequently served as President and CEO of the American Red Cross (May-November 2007) before entering Indiana state government.

The National Archives catalog (Record ID 3936205) contains a restricted file associated with Everson in a PROMIS-related record group. The specific nature of this restriction and its relationship, if any, to his 1982-1988 DOJ tenure has not been publicly documented.1
