Kevin J. Bethel is the police commissioner of Philadelphia, sworn in on January 2, 2024. On September 16, 2026, with Deputy Commissioner [Frank Vanore](/people/frank-vanore/) and the [FBI](/organizations/federal-bureau-of-investigation/)'s special agent in charge in Philadelphia, [Wayne Jacobs](/people/wayne-jacobs/), he gave the briefing at which police said that 58 people had been identified in the material recovered in the [Olney House Investigation](/events/olney-house-investigation/) and that five women shown in it were believed to be dead.[^1][^2]

### Career

Bethel was raised in Southwest Philadelphia and joined the [Philadelphia Police Department](/organizations/philadelphia-police-department/) in 1986. He served in Special Investigations, the Narcotics Strike Force, the Intelligence Unit and Internal Affairs, commanded the 17th District, and in 2009, as a captain aged 44, was promoted by Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey to deputy commissioner for patrol operations. He retired in 2016 and from 2019 to 2023 was chief of school safety for the School District of Philadelphia, overseeing about 300 school safety officers. He holds degrees from Chestnut Hill College and Saint Joseph's University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.[^1]

In November 2023 Mayor-elect Cherelle Parker named him to succeed Danielle Outlaw, and he was sworn in on the day of Parker's inauguration at a middle school in Kensington, where he pledged to concentrate enforcement on the neighborhood's open-air drug markets: "enforcement means restoring law and order humanely and with dignity."[^1]

At the briefing of September 16, 2026, Bethel said of the pace of the investigation: "We're going to dictate the pace."[^2]
