John R. Butterworth was a Philadelphia photographer and cameraman and a collaborator of the filmmaker Ray Hoersch, later known as [R.C. Horsch](/people/rc-horsch/), with whom he shot the pornographic feature *[The Erotic Memoirs of a Male Chauvinist Pig](/misc/the-erotic-memoirs-of-a-male-chauvinist-pig/)* in February 1973. Horsch called him "a close friend at the time" and described him as a news cameraman for KYW-TV; no station record of his employment has been located.[^1][^2]

### With Horsch

In April 1971 the *Philadelphia Daily News* described the Renaissance Studio, a loft at 752 South 2nd Street near Kenilworth Street where Horsch was shooting "his last scene, two reels worth" with a model and a live snake; visitors entered "through the rear past John Butterworth's still-crated photography equipment."[^3] Two years later he and Horsch made *The Erotic Memoirs of a Male Chauvinist Pig* with [Georgina Spelvin](/people/georgina-spelvin/), [Tina Russell](/people/tina-russell/), [Darby Lloyd Rains](/people/darby-lloyd-rains/), and Helen Madigan; Horsch said the money came mostly from the bar owner [Salvatore La Russa](/people/salvatore-la-russa/).[^1][^2]

In September 1991 the *Philadelphia Inquirer* listed the registration of the fictitious name Butterworth's Hickory Pit, a barbecue restaurant in North Wales, with Raymond C. Horsch and John R. Butterworth as the registrants, at the North Wales train station. Horsch listed the restaurant as a trade name in his Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition of 1993.[^4][^5]
