[Iran Najd Rankuni](/people/iran-najd-rankuni/) was the [Tehran](/places/tehran/) contact for the [Hashemi brothers](/people/hashemi-brothers/). He was the head of the Dervish movement and a son-in-law of [Hojjat El-Islam Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani](/people/ali-akbar-hashemi-rafsanjani/), who was to become president of [Iran](/places/iran/).[^1]

[Rankuni](/people/iran-najd-rankuni/) was connected with the [Iranian Revolution](/events/iranian-revolution/). However, he did not have direct access to the Supreme Council, which actually called the shots in [Iran](/places/iran/), and therefore could not set up a serious dialogue between the [Americans](/places/united-states/) and the [Iranians](/places/iran/) for the release of the hostages.[^1]
