Felix Bauckholt, who used the name "Ophelia," was a German national and quantitative trader who became part of the [Zizian](/organizations/the-zizians/) group and was killed in the January 20, 2025 shootout in Coventry, Vermont, in which U.S. Border Patrol agent David Maland also died. Bauckholt's trajectory from elite mathematics competition to a half-million-dollar Wall Street trading job to a fatal roadside gunfight made the case one of the most widely reported entries into the [Rationalist Community](/concepts/rationalist-community/)-adjacent cult.[^1][^2]

### Mathematics and Trading Career

Bauckholt represented Germany at the International Olympiad in Informatics, a high-school programming competition, winning a gold medal in 2014 and a bronze in 2015, then left Germany on a scholarship to study pure mathematics at the University of Waterloo in Canada, graduating in 2019. While still in college Bauckholt interned at Jane Street Capital, an elite quantitative trading firm in New York, and after graduating with honors took a job as a quantitative trader at Tower Research Capital. By early 2023 Bauckholt was earning more than half a million dollars a year and living in Jersey City, New Jersey, on an H-1B visa.[^1][^3]

The Tower Research role sat at the high end of the quantitative-trading market that the Olympiad and Waterloo pipeline feeds, where firms recruit competition medalists directly into algorithmic trading. The H-1B status tied Bauckholt's lawful presence in the United States to that employment, so the eventual drift away from Wall Street and into the LaSota network also loosened the immigration footing that the job had supplied. Colleagues recalled an exceptional technical mind, and the contrast between the trajectory and the roadside death in Vermont became the hook for much of the early coverage.[^1][^2]

### The Zizian Network and Death

Bauckholt's Jersey City apartment became a gathering place for a circle of friends, most of them highly educated transgender women who shared a preoccupation with the dangers of artificial intelligence, the same network that formed around [Jack LaSota](/people/jack-lasota/). By mid-2023 Bauckholt had rented half a duplex in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and [Teresa Youngblut](/people/teresa-youngblut/) later took a place nearby, putting the two in the same East Coast cluster of members in the months before the shooting. The firearms the pair carried into Vermont had been bought by [Michelle Zajko](/people/michelle-zajko/), the person of interest in the Pennsylvania killing of her parents, according to prosecutors.[^2][^4][^5]

On January 20, 2025, Bauckholt was traveling with Youngblut when Border Patrol agents stopped their vehicle on Interstate 91 in Coventry near the Canadian border. The stop followed several days of surveillance prompted by a Lyndonville hotel employee who reported the pair around January 14 for wearing all-black tactical gear and a holstered firearm. According to the FBI affidavit, Youngblut fired first with a .40-caliber Glock 23 and Bauckholt attempted to draw a weapon before agents shot and killed Bauckholt; Maland died of his wounds and Youngblut was wounded and later charged with his murder. A search of the vehicle recovered multiple firearms, hollow-point rounds, a ballistic helmet, night-vision goggles, and handheld radios.[^4][^6]
