He pleaded guilty in March 2010 to obstruction of an official proceeding under 18 U.S.C. section 1512(c) and was sentenced to eighteen months in federal prison.[^1] ### The Sting According to the criminal complaint, a cooperating witness told the FBI of Rodriguez's material, and the "associate" to whom the witness referred Rodriguez was an undercover employee of the Bureau. On October 29, 2009, the undercover agent contacted Rodriguez by telephone. Rodriguez said he had not given the information to "any law enforcement agency or any of the civil attorneys," and described it as "the Holy Grail or Golden Nugget." The charged conduct ran from as early as January 18, 2007, while the federal grand jury investigation of Epstein by the [U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida](/organizations/us-attorneys-office-for-the-southern-district-of-florida/) was open, through on or about November 3, 2009, in Palm Beach County.[^1] ### Prosecution The complaint was filed on December 1, 2009 before Magistrate Judge Linnea R. Johnson, sworn by an FBI special agent assigned to a Safe Streets Task Force, and bears the name of Assistant U.S. Attorney [Ann Marie Villafana](/people/ann-marie-villafana/), the line prosecutor on the Epstein investigation who had worked on the September 2007 [non-prosecution agreement](/events/epstein-non-prosecution-agreement/). Rodriguez was arrested on December 8, 2009 and released the next day on a personal surety bond of 50,000 dollars. He waived indictment on February 1, 2010, and the case (No. 9:10-cr-80015) was assigned to Judge [Kenneth A. Marra](/people/kenneth-marra/), who also presided over the [Crime Victims' Rights Act](/concepts/crime-victims-rights-act/) litigation in [Doe v. United States](/events/doe-v-united-states/) and over [Virginia Roberts](/people/virginia-giuffre/)' 2009 suit against Epstein.[^1][^2] On March 18, 2010 Rodriguez signed a plea agreement and factual proffer admitting that he had "corruptly obstructed and impeded" an official proceeding, a federal grand jury, in violation of 18 U.S.C. section 1512(c), an offense carrying a maximum of twenty years. On June 21, 2010 Marra entered judgment on the single count: eighteen months in the custody of the Bureau of Prisons, two years of supervised release, and a special assessment of 100 dollars.[^1] Epstein himself had received an agreed eighteen-month state sentence under the 2007 agreement, served largely on work release.[^3] ### The Directory at the Maxwell Trial A copy of the same contact book was admitted as Government Exhibit 52 at the 2021 trial of [Ghislaine Maxwell](/people/ghislaine-maxwell/) in the [Southern District of New York](/organizations/us-attorneys-office-for-the-southern-district-of-new-york/), over defense objections, after its authentication by another former Palm Beach house manager, Juan Alessi, on December 8, 2021.[^4] [^1]: United States v.
