[Alan Bond](/people/alan-bond/) was a wealthy [Australian](/places/australia/) businessman. He was involved in joint ventures with [Carlos Cardoen](/people/carlos-cardoen/) and had connections to the [CIA](/organizations/central-intelligence-agency/)'s operations.[^1]

In 1987, a contribution was made to the West Australian Labor Party from the [CIA](/organizations/central-intelligence-agency/), involving [Richard Babayan](/people/richard-babayan/) and [Earl Brian](/people/earl-brian/) acting on behalf of [Hadron](/organizations/hadron/). This money was passed on by one of [Maxwell's](/people/robert-maxwell/) companies in [Australia](/places/australia/) to be held by the [Pergamon Press Trust Fund](/organizations/pergamon-press-trust-fund/) in [Moscow](/places/moscow/). [Babayan](/people/richard-babayan/) handed the check to Yosef Goldberg, who in turn gave it to [Bond](/people/alan-bond/) in his role as the guardian of the [John Curtin Foundation](/organizations/john-curtin-foundation/) funds.[^1]

[Bond](/people/alan-bond/) invested loans obtained from various [Australian](/places/australia/) banks into [Cardoen's](/people/carlos-cardoen/) construction company in [Iraq](/places/iraq/), which was building a vast "agricultural complex" outside [Baghdad](/places/baghdad/). He also purchased the Chilean phone company from [President Pinochet](/people/augusto-pinochet/) for approximately $300 million, making promises of improvements that were not fulfilled.[^1]

In late September 1988, an [Israeli](/places/israel/) intelligence officer briefed the head of ASIS about [Bond's](/people/alan-bond/) activities in [Chile](/places/chile/). Following this, [Bond](/people/alan-bond/) almost immediately pulled out of [Cardoen Industries](/people/carlos-cardoen/) and later out of [Chile](/places/chile/) altogether.[^1]

[Bond](/people/alan-bond/) was convicted of bank fraud in May 1992 and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. He later went bankrupt and became involved in African mining investments.[^1]
