Haddon ran Gary Hart's Senate campaigns of 1974 and 1980 and was national political director of Hart's 1987 presidential campaign. Through its lawyers [Laura A. Menninger](/people/laura-menninger/) and Jeffrey S. Pagliuca the firm represented [Ghislaine Maxwell](/people/ghislaine-maxwell/) in [Giuffre v. Maxwell](/events/giuffre-v-maxwell/) from 2015 and in the criminal case [United States v. Maxwell](/events/united-states-v-maxwell/) from 2020, and in 2022 it sued Maxwell, her brother Kevin Maxwell and her husband Scott Borgerson for more than 878,000 dollars in unpaid fees.[^1][^2][^3][^4] ### Founders and Politics Harold "Hal" Haddon had been Chief Trial Deputy of the Colorado Public Defender's Office. According to the firm's biography of him, "Hal was the Campaign Manager for Colorado U.S. Senator Gary Hart's 1974 and 1980 campaigns as well as the National Political Director for Senator Hart's Presidential Campaign in 1987. He also served as the Finance Chairman for Colorado Governor Richard Lamm's 1978 campaign." Haddon served from 2005 to 2008 as personal representative of the estate of Hunter S. Thompson, whom he had defended in 1990 and 1991 on sexual assault, explosives and drug charges that were dismissed after a preliminary hearing.[^1] ### Clients The firm's biography of Haddon lists representations of the basketball player Kobe Bryant, whose 2003 Colorado sexual assault charge was dismissed during jury selection; John Ramsey, father of JonBenét Ramsey, in the Colorado state grand jury investigation of her 1996 murder, whom the district attorney publicly exonerated in July 2008 after DNA testing; Qwest Communications in a federal securities fraud investigation from 2002 to 2010 that produced no corporate indictment; Rockwell International in the federal environmental crimes investigation of the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant from 1989 to 1998, which ended in a 1992 corporate guilty plea and an 18.5 million dollar fine; McGraw-Hill in a 2003 federal false statements investigation that produced no indictment; and the University of Colorado in a patent fraud case against a division of Wyeth, retried to an affirmed 58 million dollar judgment.[^1] ### Maxwell Menninger, a former law clerk to Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, joined the firm as a shareholder in 2012 after the Colorado State Public Defender and Holland & Hart. [Virginia Giuffre](/people/virginia-giuffre/) sued Maxwell for defamation on September 21, 2015 before Judge [Robert W. Sweet](/people/robert-w-sweet/), represented by [Boies Schiller Flexner](/organizations/boies-schiller-flexner/); Menninger and Pagliuca represented Maxwell. The case settled on May 24, 2017, but its sealed record, produced under Sweet's March 17, 2016 protective order, was litigated for a further nine years.[^2][^3] In the criminal case, Pagliuca wrote to Judge [Alison Nathan](/people/alison-nathan/) on August 24, 2020 that the government had subpoenaed from Giuffre's lawyers nearly 90,000 pages of civil discovery still under the Giuffre v. Maxwell protective order, more than half of the 165,000 pages of criminal discovery, while the Second Circuit and Judge [Loretta Preska](/people/loretta-preska/) were considering whether to unseal the same material, and warned that "the cat will be out of the bag." The firm's lawyers, with Mark S. Cohen of Cohen & Gresser and Bobbi C. Sternheim, moved to dismiss for breach of the 2007 [Epstein non-prosecution agreement](/events/epstein-non-prosecution-agreement/); Nathan denied the motion on April 16, 2021. On November 1, 2021 the firm served a defense expert disclosure concerning the memory researcher Elizabeth Loftus. Maxwell was convicted on December 29, 2021.[^5][^6][^7] ### The Fee Suit The firm filed suit in Denver on August 22, 2022 against Maxwell, Kevin Maxwell and Borgerson, alleging that it had not been paid more than 878,000 dollars for its work at trial and on appeal. It alleged that Maxwell had put her brother in charge of her legal fees after her arrest, that he paid "a fraction" of the bills through trial while urging the firm to continue on appeal issues, that he blamed Borgerson for obstructing payment, and that Borgerson formed a limited liability company to buy real estate so as to shield his wife's assets from creditors.
