On May 14, 2022, [Payton Gendron](/people/payton-gendron/) (18) drove approximately 200 miles from his home in Conklin, New York to the Tops supermarket on Jefferson Avenue in the predominantly Black East Side neighborhood of Buffalo, New York and opened fire, killing 10 people and wounding 3. All 10 killed were Black; Gendron had selected the location specifically for its demographics. He livestreamed the attack through a helmet-mounted camera on Twitch until the platform removed the stream approximately two minutes into the attack. He had distributed a 180-page manifesto explicitly framed as continuing [Brenton Tarrant](/people/brenton-tarrant/)'s 2019 [Christchurch attack](/events/2019-christchurch-mosque-shootings/). Gendron pleaded guilty in November 2022 and received multiple consecutive life sentences without parole in state and federal proceedings. [Juraj Krajčík](/people/juraj-krajčík/) named Gendron as his "final nudge" before the October 2022 [Bratislava](/events/2022-bratislava-lgbtq-bar-shooting/) attack; [Nikita Casap](/people/nikita-casap/) also cited him before his February 2025 Wisconsin killings.[^1]

### The Attack

Gendron arrived at the Tops supermarket parking lot at approximately 2:30 PM. He was wearing body armor and a helmet with a mounted camera. He opened fire in the parking lot and continued into the store. Aaron Salter Jr., a retired police officer employed as the store's security guard, fired at Gendron but was unable to penetrate his body armor and was killed. Gendron surrendered to police at the scene after the attack.

The Twitch stream was active for approximately two minutes before the platform removed it. The footage was captured and redistributed widely through Telegram and other platforms, repeating the redistribution pattern established after Christchurch.

The 10 people killed were: Aaron Salter Jr., Roberta Drury, Margus Morrison, Andre Mackniel, Katherine Massey, Heyward Patterson, Celestine Chaney, Geraldine Talley, Ruth Whitfield, and Pearl Young.[^2]

### Manifesto and Radicalization

Gendron's 180-page manifesto borrowed Tarrant's format: a question-and-answer self-interview alongside strategic, ideological, and operational arguments. It adopted the "great replacement" conspiracy theory framework Tarrant had drawn from French writer Renaud Camus. The manifesto documented Gendron's radicalization through 4chan's /pol/ board and accelerationist content, included specific targeting research explaining his choice of Buffalo's East Side, and framed the attack as a contribution to ongoing acceleration. He had no documented connection to an organized network prior to the attack.

The Terrorgram Collective circulated Gendron saint-card graphics in the same format as Tarrant materials, incorporating him into the Terrorgram saints canon and presenting his attack as an inspiration pipeline to subsequent consumers of the network's content.[^3]

### Conviction and Sentencing

Gendron was charged in state court with ten counts of first-degree murder as a hate crime and related charges. He pleaded guilty in November 2022. On February 15, 2023, Erie County Court Judge Susan Eagan sentenced him to life in prison without possibility of parole on each murder count, to run consecutively.

Federal prosecutors separately charged Gendron with hate crimes, obstruction of religion, and use of a firearm in a hate crime. He pleaded guilty to federal charges and was sentenced to additional consecutive life terms by U.S. District Judge Geoffrey Crawford.[^1]
