The "Seven Fold Way" (also called the "Sevenfold Way") is the [Order of Nine Angles](/organizations/order-of-nine-angles/)' seven-stage initiatory path, described in *Naos: A Guide to Becoming* (1989) and elaborated throughout O9A's published literature. The path progresses from Initiate to Immortal across stages corresponding to the traditional seven planets of Hermetic and Kabbalistic cosmology (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). Each stage involves a set of prescribed ordeals, practices, and tests including extended solo outdoor survival exercises, [Insight Roles](/concepts/insight-roles/) (transgressive and criminal acts undertaken as spiritual development), and prolonged engagement with O9A's nexion (cell) activities. The Seven Fold Way's structure gives O9A a distinct organizational logic: individual practitioners work toward advancement over long time horizons, with real-world criminal and violent acts embedded as requirements rather than encouraged as optional.[^1]

### The Seven Stages

The stages of the Seven Fold Way, with their planetary correspondences, are:

1. Initiate (Moon): entry stage, introduction to O9A texts and community
2. External Adept (Mercury): formation of a nexion, physical training, first Insight Roles
3. Internal Adept (Venus): three-month solo "camlad" outdoor survival ordeal, sustained nexion work, advanced Insight Roles
4. Master/Mistress (Sun): leadership of a nexion, advanced practice
5. Grand Master/Grand Lady Master (Mars): leadership across multiple nexions
6. Magus (Jupiter): theoretical and philosophical contribution to the O9A corpus
7. Immortal (Saturn): final eschatological stage, rarely claimed

The most practically significant transition for law enforcement purposes is the move from External Adept to Internal Adept, which requires the completion of at least one major Insight Role. O9A texts prescribe that Insight Roles should be "sinister" acts that would be judged criminal by mainstream society and that confront the practitioner with genuine danger, harm to others, or transgression of fundamental moral norms.[^1]

### Physical Ordeals

The Internal Adept stage requires a "camlad" or "camladan" - a period of approximately three months living alone outdoors, without permanent shelter, in a geographically isolated area. The ordeal is framed as a test of the practitioner's survival capacity and as a means of confronting the raw reality of existence stripped of civilizational comforts. O9A texts present the successful completion of the camlad as producing a fundamental transformation in the practitioner's psychological and spiritual constitution.

Physical fitness and outdoor survival are emphasized throughout the path, distinguishing O9A from purely text-based extremist traditions. ### Violence as Initiatory Practice

The Seven Fold Way's structure means that serious violence is prescribed as a required element of advancement rather than presented as an optional expression of ideology. An O9A adherent pursuing the Seven Fold Way is prescribed to commit violence as a personal spiritual requirement, independent of any organizational directive.

[Ethan Phelan Melzer](/people/ethan-phelan-melzer/)'s 2020 plot to facilitate an ISIS attack on his own Army unit was explicitly framed in O9A doctrinal terms in his communications with an undercover FBI operative: the planned mass killing of his fellow soldiers was his Insight Role for advancing through the Seven Fold Way initiatory stages.[^3]
