Chile was the [[South America]]n nation where [[Central Intelligence Agency]] Deputy Director of Operations [[William Colby|Bill Nelson's superior]] ran the agency's controversial destabilization program that culminated in the overthrow and murder of elected President Salvador Allende in 1973. Nelson oversaw this operation during his tenure at the CIA.[^1] ### CIA Operations The CIA's Chile program became a template for later covert operations in [[Central America]], including the Contra war. The methods developed in Chile, including the use of propaganda, economic warfare, and support for opposition groups, were applied on a larger scale in Nicaragua. The Chile operation demonstrated the CIA's willingness to undermine democratic governments in pursuit of U.S. foreign policy objectives, a pattern that continued through the Contra era and the protection of drug trafficking assets.[^2] ### Footnotes [^1]: Gary Webb, *Dark Alliance*, Ch. 9.
